Here Are A Few Handy Home Drain Unblocking Tips

A jug of hot water can help unblock on a sink clogged with grease.

  • First empty the sink using a bucket.

  • Tip the hot water into the empty sink (the hot water dilutes the grease).

  • If you get the sink partially running, put the plug back in, fill the sink with hot very soapy water and then let the plug out. This should flush the remaining grease out of the plumbing pipes.

A common blockage is found in the kitchen sink. Sometimes a blocked drain pipe in your plumbing can be cleared with a simple homemade remedy.

  • First empty the sink using a bucket.

  • Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain.

  • Followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar (note: these ingredients interact with foaming and fumes, so replace the drain cover loosely).

Another common drain blockage is in the toilet.

  • Toilets can sometimes be unblocked using a plunger.

  • Be sure to get a good seal around the bottom of the pipe.

  • Be careful that you don’t get any splash back from the toilet bowl!

Hair removal cream (sounds crazy but it can work)

  • Pouring hair removal cream down the drain.

  • Let stand for 45 minutes.

  • Once the cream has had a chance to react with solids in the plumbing pipes, run some water to try and flush out the solids from the plumbing pipes.
